Reporting to the Senior Manager of Business Solutions, the Database Architect is accountable for overall database administration, setting data architecture principles and creating models of data that enables the implementation of the intended business architecture. The Database Architect defines how the data will be stored, secured, backed up, consumed, integrated and managed by the various IT systems and applications using or processing that data. The Database Architect focuses on the data itself and how it will be used, by looking at the big picture and how the corporation will make use of it.

Duties for this progressive role include, but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for conducting feasibility studies as required on new business opportunities and challenges;

  • Provides overall direction, guidance, and definition of IT architecture to effectively support the corporate business strategy;

  • Assists Business Analysts with preparing Business Case, Business Requirements, Gap Analysis, Logical Data Models and Design documents for proposed solutions;

  • Responsible for providing input on transformation of business requirements as represented by logical data models into physical data models;

  • Responsible for designing and implementing business and data/information requirements into databases management systems;

  • Responsible for developing programs to translate business requirements and designs into information systems;

  • Assists in the development, implementation, and testing of the Town of Whitby software solutions including software configuration and customization. Performs testing of purchased software packages and liaises with the vendor for modifications;

  • Responsible for development and maintenance of the TIS database operational documentation database as outlined in the IT service catalog;

  • Responsible for providing technical expertise as it relates to the design, development, support and administration of key information systems in the context of data modeling, connectivity, performance and security;

  • Develop, implement and maintain safeguards to ensure integrity of corporate data;

  • Leads programs to develop, maintain, and govern the enterprise architecture across the organization;

  • Contributes to the overall construction of logical, functional, and physical database and application designs and features, and ensures adherence to project deadlines, specifications, and budget;

  • Assess and cultivate long-term strategic goals for data warehousing in conjunction with data users, department managers, clients, and other key stakeholders;
  • Develop, implement and maintain routine backup & recovery and disaster recovery procedures;

  • Network with vendors and peers in external IT organizations, through user groups, in order to remain current with emerging technologies to satisfy the Enterprise’s needs;

  • Installing and testing new versions and patches of the database management systems;

  • Act as a project/technical lead where assigned on projects; and,

  • Create and maintain functional and technical documentation at system level.

What You Bring To Our Team

As the successful applicant, you must possess:

Knowledge Requirements

  • College or University degree in a related discipline (e.g., Computer Science, Management Information Systems) including a database certification program, with ten (10) years of progressively responsible related experience in the information technology environment for a complex, multi-site, unionized enterprise environment, or equivalent combination of education and experience;

  • Five (5) + years of expertise in: SQL Server, Oracle and Database Administration and Programming;

  • Five (5) + years of experience using Java based middleware technologies such as Tomcat and Apache;

Skill requirements

  • A broad understanding of relational database security and audit compliance standards;

  • Experience with various scripting languages such as PowerShell and batch file programming to support automation of database administration tasks;

  • Hands-on experience with data architecting, data mining, large-scale data modeling, and business requirements gathering/analysis;

  • Working technical experience with designing, building, installing, configuring and supporting data warehouses;

  • Completion of Oracle Database Administration Certification.

  • Microsoft SQL Server certification would be considered an asset.

  • Strong project planning, tracking and management skills;

  • Strong understanding of IT Service Management discipline as it relates to change, incident and problem management. ITILv3 or higher certification is considered an asset.

What We Offer You

  • Salary: $101,210 - $119,070 per annum (Band E)
