Position Overview
We are currently seeking a Nurse Practitioner to serve clients at the scheduled Lambton Public Health (LPH) Sexual Health Clinic. This position will require availability to work up to 3 days per week with casual availability to work other shifts throughout the week as needed and will support the re-establishment of our Sexual Health Clinic services, which includes providing teaching and clinical mentoring to Public Health Nurses.
The Nurse Practitioner will provide clinical services consisting of comprehensive one-to-one physical examinations, assessment of past medical history and history of presenting illness, diagnosis, counselling, medical interventions, and specialist referrals as needed in the areas of sexual health, which includes sexually transmitted infections such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, hepatitis C, and HIV/AIDS.
Duties and Responsibilities
Responsibilities Include:
- To provide health assessments, including conducting physical examinations and past medical history taking for all clients served.
- To diagnose common conditions, diseases, and disorders based on physical examinations and history, as per Ontario Nurse Practitioner Standards of Practice.
- To initiate screening procedures and provide treatment, including prescribing medications as per the Ontario Nurse Practitioner Standards of Practice.
- To co-ordinate care, including the monitoring of both acute and chronic conditions.
- To link clients with appropriate community and health care services as required, for both acute and chronic conditions.
- To refer clients to specialists as needed and provide the necessary follow-up.
- To work closely with LPH Sexual Health Clinic Team members, which includes Public Health Nurses, to plan and evaluate programs and services as required.
- To maintain records, reports, and statistics necessary for program function and evaluation, including the utilization of a LPH computer and EMR software (Profile).
- To provide care under medical directives and with the supervision of the Medical Officer of Health.
- To comply with the Health Protection and Promotion Act and enabling regulations, and the Ontario Public Health Standards, along with other related legislation.
- To work within the policies and procedures established by LPH.
- To assume responsibility for the workload assigned, working independently and co-operatively with other LPH staff.
- To participate in continuing education activities as required to maintain licensure as a Nurse Practitioner.
- To act on other duties as assigned by the Medical Officer of Health or Program Manager.
- Will work flexible hours as required in response to community-based health hazards.
General:
- Must keep up-to-date on all relevant legislation, County of Lambton Policies and Procedures including Privacy and Health and Safety, etc. ensuring that these are implemented as prescribed.
- Must possess the physical ability to meet the duties and responsibilities of the job description.
- Must be able to work flexible hours in order to meet the needs of the identified populations.
- Must maintain ability to travel in a timely manner to other offices, work locations or sites as authorized by the Corporation for business reasons.
- Must provide proof of carrying own malpractice insurance, renewed annually.
- Keyboarding skills required.
- An ability to work in an inter-disciplinary team environment required.
- French language skills an asset.
- Ability to provide non-judgmental and inclusive service to all clients required.
- Self-starter demonstrating initiative and the ability to take appropriate action, and direction.

Supervision Requirements
Direct Supervision: none
Indirect Supervision: Works closely with Public Health Nurses in the LPH Sexual Health Clinic, which includes Registered Nurses and Registered Practical Nurses.
Functional Authority: Provides direction, consultative services and advice on clinical issues and services to the Sexual Health Clinic Team.
Qualifications
Minimum Formal Education
- Baccalaureate in Nursing and graduate of a Nurse Practitioner Program.
- Current registration with the College of Nurses as a Registered Nurse in the Extended Class (RN(EC)).
- Up-to-date certificate in CPR.
- Must provide proof of carrying own malpractice insurance, renewed annually.
Experience
- A minimum of 2 years experience in public/community health with a minimum of 2 years in a clinical setting, including work managing sexual health presentations.
- Experience and training working with vulnerable populations, including Indigenous communities, LGBTQ+, people experiencing homelessness, people who use drugs.
- Requires knowledge and background to counsel individuals on any sexual health issues, including adolescents.
- Familiarity with the Ontario Public Health Standards and Protocols, as well as current Ontario guidelines for treatment of sexually transmitted infections.
- Past accomplishments will include demonstrated inter-personal skills, organizational skills; excellent assessment, examination, and treatment skills; program planning and evaluation skills; communication skills (both written and verbal), and computer skills, including use of EMRs.
A valid Ontario Driver’s Licence and use of a vehicle.
